As mentioned in my last post, the prolific, diverse, and extremely talented Tom McConnell has blessed us with some new music that he has kindly allowed us to share with you as part of our “A Temporary Space” project.
And in typical Tom style, these are being released under a new alias: Edvert.
After spending the last few years moving around, Tom recently set up a new space where he can play around and produce music. All the songs here were born out of live jam sessions where he would hit the record button and experiment with a variety of elements – creating either an ambient drone or a pulsating techno track, where sounds and FX move around playfully in the background, occasionally being brought to the forefront of the mix.
This is a trait I hear a lot in Tom’s music, and it’s hard for me not to imagine some of the sounds having a life of their own, the way they dance around the main groove is fun and exciting. These noises also help keep the tracks interesting and unpredictable, even at 8-plus minutes long.
It’s also important to point out that everything is by design. Those sounds you hear low down in the mix are kept there for a reason; they are meant to be heard, but they are intentionally obscured. Tom thinks this sounds like his studio equipment is malfunctioning, or someone spilled juice on his computer. Again, all of this adds to the playful nature of his work.
One of the things I love about these new tracks is that they weren’t made to be released, they were made for fun. Much like the Odd Food release we put out, as soon as I heard these songs I wanted others to hear them. That’s something that has always driven both Sector 12/12 and the blog, a desire to spread good music by nice people, that’s rooted in a desire to be both expressive and creative.
We’ve split Tom’s new material into two releases: the first contains two deep techno jams, while the second features three ambient soundscapes.
Keeping in the spirit of a hands-on approach to making music, we had these tracks mastered by Mark Williams using analog gear.
For reference, here is a list of the equipment used to master these tracks:
- Amphion ONE18
- KNIF SOMA
- Chandler TG12345 Curve Bender
- Sontec MEP250EX
- Fairchild 670 MKII P.o.m.
- Maselec MLA-4
- Prism Sound Dream ADA8-XR
