Tom McConnell – Gritty House and 4/4 on 12/12

In addition to the blog and the label, we also curated a monthly radio show on My House Your House – something we couldn’t have done, for many reasons, without the support and hard work of Neil Sherwood from Repair Your Soul.

The show was called BS1212, or Beyond Sector 12/12. It ran for a few hours each month and featured guest mixes alongside Neil, Black Classical, Sonar’s Ghost, and myself.

Looking back at it, we had some great guests, including LTJ Xperience, Volcov (Neroli), Alex Phountzi (Bugz in the Attic / NameBrandSound), and frequent mixes from Ethan Hull—part of the Rendezvous collective of DJs out of LA who specialise in rare soundtracks, library music, and cult cinema.

One month, we featured a mix from Afrikan Sciences out of New York, who played the original version of “Odd Food” by Tom McConnell. The track was unreleased, so I reached out and got talking with Tom. Shortly after that, we put the track out on Sector 12/12, although we pulled it not too long after as Tom secured a vinyl release for it alongside another of his productions and a collaboration with Afrikan Sciences under the name Sirius Type.

Tom found an alternative version of “Odd Food” that we released instead, called the “Dessert Mix.” This was backed by two other tracks: “True Flower” and “Charms.”

The EP was critically acclaimed and received support from the likes of Midland and Tony Nwachukwu (Attica Blues / CDR).

Some time later, Tom let us release more of his music, including tracks under his McDoo alias. In fact, he has been kind enough to allow us to showcase new music under a new alias, Edvert. We will post that over the next few days, and the tracks will be available for free download (like these) once we launch our Bandcamp.

I’ve gone through the Sector 12/12 archives and selected 10 tracks from Tom to help showcase his diverse sound. From the blissful ambience of “Applesauce” to the woozy sound of “True Flower,” while also including heavy hitters like “My Drum Machine” and “Taped,” cosmic melodies blend with anti-social four-fours to create a unique blend of dance-floor punk-funk.

Expect imperfections as we venture into the seedy side of electronic music.

Tom recently released a 8-track EP called Committed To The Bit on La Squadra under the name Chauncey McDougle. I would highly recommend checking it out, especially “Midnite Marshmallow.” The EP also contains “Shapemaker,” a track we previously put out as part of our Year Four compilation.

Tom also has a SoundCloud here.
